WEEKEND RACING REPORT – July 10th / 11th

Michigan was blessed with two incredible events this past weekend, July 10/11,

Saturday, July 10 – Grand Cycling Classic in Grand Rapids, a National Race Calendar event

The racing on Saturday was INCREDIBLE!  I raced in the Men’s Cat 2-3 field, which had 83 HUNGRY racers contesting it.  Trust me, there are few things more exhilarating than battling it out over the old brick roads of downtown Grand Rapids with 83 other racers.  I even appreciated the bricks, which brought a little of this years Tour de France Stage 3 to Michigan.

All of the races I watched were fantastic.  The finale’, the men’s Pro 1 event was INCREDIBLE!!!  This 19 yr old from New Zealand, who was racing for the Grand Rapids based Bissell Pro Cycling Team, held off the field SOLO for the final 20 minutes of the 90 minute event.  With some of the best and most powerful pro cycling teams in the nation chasing him down, he held on to win by only 2 bike lengths.  I think my heart rate hit it’s max more just watching this race than racing my event earlier in the day.  Like I said, it was INCREDIBLE!!!

Sunday, July 11 – Terry Reisch Memorial Race in Hillsdale

In it’s second year this race drew in 130 racers and raised $4500 for the Hospice of Hillsdale County.  If you missed this event, you missed one that is a CLASSIC bike race.  Race promoter Dan Herzberg has done an exceptional job laying out a course that is PERFECT!  Think of this event as a mini World Road Championship course.  It’s a 4 mile loop over a rolling, high-speed course that makes the racing super exciting.  The course rewards attacking, aggressive racing from strong all-arounders.  It’s and ABSOLUTE BLAST to race the Terry Reisch circuit.  Throw in the enthusiastic support of the race by the volunteers, police and residents of Hillsdale and I predict this race will become a CLASSIC, must-do event for Michigan racers in the coming years.

UPCOMING RACES

The next race in Michigan is the upcoming BTR Park Criterium in Kalamazoo, MI on Saturday, July 17.  This is the next event in the season long Michigan Challenge Series.  Pre-reg ends Thursday, July 15th, so register NOW:

http://www.truesport.com/register/events/flyer.asp?ID=1228

The Michigan Challenge is an ABSOLUTE battle this year.  In the Men Pro I/II, Nate Williams (Bissell) leads Daniel Lam (Priority Health) by only 7 ½ points, but Ryan Cross (Wolverine) is making a charge and cannot be ruled out.  He’s supported by the Wolverine Army, so things will definitely get interesting.

The Women I/II field is lead by Mackenzie Woodring (Priority Health), but another Wolverine, Sarah Demerly, is also making a run at the lead along with Alicia Trevino (MPI-Mainstreet) who is only 18 points behind Mackenzie.

Seriously, nearly EVER category is VERY CLOSE!!!!  Don’t miss any of the upcoming Michigan Challenge races!

SATURDAY / SUNDAY – JULY 24th & 25th

A week and a half out is a HUGE double weekend on July 24th/25th  in Fenton/Flint, with the VERY popular Maillot Jaune Road Race on Saturday in Fenton and the newest Michigan race, “Le Champion de Pave” Criterium in Flint on Sunday.

The Maillot Jaune course is another very challenging road race, with three categorized climbs over the 13 mile course.

The “Le Champion de Pave” Criterium on Sunday in Flint is looking very promising.  Plus, with the cancellation of this years Chicago Criterium, it is one of the biggest downtown criteriums happening in a 3 state area on this weekend.  I’ve already heard from the Panther Cycling Team that they’re looking to try to cash in on the $1700 prize list in the Mens Pro I/II race.

So, don’t drive 8 hours to SUPERWEEK, save your gas money and check out these two SUPER AWESOME Michigan races!!!
